The Brief

As a lone visual designer, it is your job to design an interactive virtual environment that will act as a distraction technique for a paediatric patient whilst receiving radiotherapy treatment. The esteem that would be brought by your own design being chosen, above the designs brought by other design companies, is likely to position your company number one in the field of Virtual Reality in medical environments.

For radiotherapy treatment of tumours in the head and neck area, the patients head is usually immobilised with a low melting point mask, which is attached firmly to the treatment table, this ensures that there is no movement of the head when the session is taking place. With each patient having their own individually fitted mask that that can be used at all their treatment sessions.
Although the experience needs to be immersive, care must be taken that the patient DOES NOT try to move their head when the sessions are taking place.
In normal use, Virtual Reality headsets are used when the wearer is either when sitting down or more often than not standing up. In this situation the Patient will be horizontal and will not be able to move their head, they will have access to a controller, which can be used as a pointer or joystick device.
Branding
The sense of wonder and marvel is often associated with the magical concept of virtual reality and the immersive experience it provides.
This is where the name 'Mirari' originated; the Latin word for 'to marvel'.

Storyboard
A storyboard is a simple tool to visualise an idea at an early stage is the development project. The storyboard below shows the intended visuals and interactions for the game.
VR Headset Gameplay
The game was developed using Unity 2019.3 and built for an Android platform. Using Oculus Integration Assets, the gameplay can be seen running on an Oculus Go VR Headset.
The user is first presented with a menu scene where they can choose to begin the game or access the game settings. The settings menu gives control over the background music volume as well as the option to hide the game. The latter feature creates a relaxing environment for the user.
Once 'Play' is selected, the user is taken to a level selector. The game has 5 levels, each with increasing difficulty. Upon completion of a level, the user is scored 1-3 stars based on the number of interactions and this subsequently unlocks the next level.
